Primary Texts: Acts 1:9–11; John 14:1–3; 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; 2 Thessalonians 1:6–10; Hebrews 9:27–28; 2 Peter 3:10
Bridge to next lesson: John 5:28–29
“This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.” — Acts 1:11
The second coming of Christ will be one visible, final, and decisive event that gathers the faithful, raises the dead, judges the disobedient, and ends the present world.
Key Texts: Acts 1:9–11; John 14:1–3
The same Jesus who ascended will return in the same visible way. He promised troubled disciples, “I will come again and receive you to Myself.” The church waits for the Person of Christ, not a prophetic schedule.
Gem: The church is not waiting for a schedule. The church is waiting for the Savior.
Key Texts: 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; 2 Peter 3:10
The Lord descends with a shout, the voice of the archangel, and the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ rise first. The day comes like a thief—sudden, not secret—with cosmic roar and destruction of the present order.
Key Texts: 2 Thessalonians 1:6–10; Hebrews 9:27–28; 2 Peter 3:11
For the faithful, Christ appears “a second time for salvation” and gathers His people. For the disobedient, He brings retribution and eternal destruction. His coming includes resurrection and reaches into the grave. This demands holy conduct and godliness now.
Gem: The coming of Christ is so powerful that it reaches into the grave.
Personal: If Jesus is coming visibly and finally, casual religion and unrepented sin are insanity. Live ready today. Repent, obey the gospel, and walk faithfully.
Congregational: Stop living as though survival in culture is the goal. Worship, teach, and live as a people who expect the Lord’s return at any moment. Teach children to look for the King, not love a world scheduled for destruction.
What truth about Christ’s return must I hold firmly?
What must I obey or change immediately?
What sin or compromise must I reject?
What should I pray for regarding my readiness and my church’s readiness?
CLOSING CHARGE
The Lord is coming. The graves will answer. Be ready.
