Bridge Text: John 5:28–29

Learning Objectives

  • To see that the return of Christ is one real, visible, final event.
  • To understand that the second coming is not secret, symbolic, or staged.
  • To recognize that Christ’s return brings comfort to the faithful and destruction to the disobedient.
  • To see that Christ’s coming includes the raising of the dead and the decisive end.
  • To call saints to readiness, churches to sobriety, families to preparation, and sinners to immediate obedience.

Introduction

The second coming of Christ is not a hobby doctrine. It is not given to entertain prophecy addicts or so men can spend their lives chasing headlines. It is given to steady the church, expose false hope, crush presumption, and press every soul toward readiness.

The apostles did not preach a hidden coming, then a later coming, then another phase after that. They preached one appearing of Christ that is visible, final, and decisive. Christ is reigning now. He will return once more. And when He returns, the dead are not left in their graves. His coming includes the resurrection of the dead, the exposure of all men before God, and the end of this present world.

Thesis

The second coming of Christ will be one visible, final, and decisive event that gathers the faithful, raises the dead, judges the disobedient, and ends the present world.

I. Christ Will Return Personally, Visibly, and Certainly

Acts 1:9–11 is plain. Jesus was taken up, and angels said, “This Jesus... will come in just in the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.” The text does not describe a vague spiritual influence or a secret removal no one can detect. The same Christ who was crucified, buried, raised, and ascended is the Christ who will return. His ascension was real, and His return will be real.

In John 14:1–3, Jesus promised to come again and receive His disciples. That is not an earthly political rearrangement; it is the final gathering of Christ’s people. We are not waiting for a prophetic code to crack, modern Israel to become a center, or a postponed kingdom. We are waiting for the enthroned Son of God.

Gem: The church is not waiting for a schedule. The church is waiting for the Savior.

If Jesus is really coming back, casual religion is insanity. The certainty of His coming should strip the nonsense out of your life.

II. Christ’s Return Will Be Public, Powerful, and Impossible to Hide

1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 destroys secret-rapture theories. Paul says the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, the voice of the archangel, and the trumpet of God. Nothing about that is secret. Heaven breaks into history, the King descends, and the dead in Christ rise.

2 Peter 3:10 says the day comes "like a thief." That means unexpected, not invisible. The heavens pass away with a roar, and the elements are destroyed with intense heat. The coming of Christ is sudden in timing, but public in execution. Men will not know the day, but when it comes, the present order shatters.

III. Christ’s Return Will Bring Comfort to the Faithful and Vengeance on the Disobedient

For the faithful, His coming is comfort and completion (Hebrews 9:28). The dead in Christ are not forgotten, and the living church is not abandoned.

For the wicked, His coming is terror. 2 Thessalonians 1:6–10 states clearly that Christ will deal out retribution to those who do not know God and those who do not obey the gospel. They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction. The gospel is not merely to be admired; it must be obeyed. Grace saves those who submit to the Christ who reigns.

You will not meet Him in neutral. When Christ appears, excuses burn up.

IV. Christ’s Return Includes the Raising of the Dead

1 Thessalonians 4 states that the dead in Christ will rise first. Christ’s return is not a secret event because graves do not stay closed when the King appears.

Jesus says in John 5:28–29 that an hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice and come forth. The New Testament points to one climactic, world-shaking return, not a chain of disconnected arrivals. History does not drift on into another long earthly stage. His return brings resurrection, exposure, reckoning, and consummation.

Gem: The coming of Christ is so powerful that it reaches into the grave.

V. The Certainty of His Coming Demands Holy Readiness Now

Peter asks, “what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?” (2 Peter 3:11). The doctrine of the second coming is meant to produce holiness, not prophecy sensationalism.

The Lord’s delay is mercy, not permission to sin. You are not safer because judgment hasn't fallen yet; you are simply being given time to repent.

Conclusion

Jesus Christ is coming again. He will come visibly, publicly, and powerfully. He will gather His people, punish the disobedient, and bring the present world to its appointed end. His coming includes the raising of the dead. It is a decisive event that reaches from heaven to earth to the grave itself.

Invitation

If you are outside Christ, do not delay. Hear the gospel (Romans 10:17), believe that Jesus is the Son of God (John 8:24), repent of your sins (Luke 13:3), confess His name (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized for the remission of your sins (Acts 2:38).

If you are a Christian who has grown careless or compromised, repent while mercy is still extended. The Lord is coming. The graves will answer. Be ready.
